The Pixies: The Citi, Boston MA
Ted Mico, Melody Maker, 9 December 1989
THIS WAS billed as some kind of homecoming. And believe me, this was some kind of homecoming. Recent US reviews of the band had complained of stale and tired performance, and the group's decision to play two gigs in one night after the first Boston show sold out within hours was greeted with a marked degree of anxiety. This was the penultimate gig of a 200-date world tour and the band were at the point of complete exhaustion — the axe they employed to fell down rock's totem had become a little blunt.
