Styx: Cow Palace, San Francisco CA

Michael Goldberg, Rolling Stone, 6 March 1980

WHEN HOLLYWOOD wanted to inject some real contemporary action into Mannix or one of those made-for-TV movies back in the Sixties, they'd throw in a nightclub scene. More often than not, it would include a token rock band whose members would typically be outfitted in long, dark wigs and shiny clothes that looked like a costume department's fantasy of Carnaby Street fashions. The group's music was almost always played with exaggerated dramatics and included lots of soulless lead-guitar gymnastics. We used to laugh about those "bands."
