Update, March 2019: I KNOW exactly when I wrote the piece below, where I was, and why I withdrew it from publication. It was January 1965. I kept on playing 'Under The Boardwalk' from the Rolling Stones second album, just released, and sensing that my take on popular music up to then was missing the point, but I didn't know how or why or what to do. I lacked the ideas and the words. Now I do know, and we all know now.
