Elliott Smith: ULU, London
Neil Kulkarni, Melody Maker, 2 January 1999
CRITICS AND musicians love him. He can do no wrong. And that's when you get suspicious. That's when you start to wonder if something so wordily revered is gonna hit you on a gut-level... when you start wondering if this isn't just music for musicians, frustrated or otherwise. God, I couldn't have been more wrong: Smith could be this generation's nearest equivalent to the Motown songwriting team of Holland/Dozier/Holland. He's the life and soul of the party and he's too tough, his songs too hard as nails to ever be just another acoustic minstrel.
