DOO-WOP was a term applied to the singing style of American R 'n' B vocal groups of the Fifties, originating in the fact that the harmony support to lead vocals was often derived from simple phrases like 'doo-wop'.' That's how the Encyclopaedia of Rock describes it, and the book goes on to explain:
