Madness: Lyceum, London

Mat Snow, New Musical Express, 7 January 1984

"ON A serious note...": these days beneath the party hats Madness wear a worried frown. In spring they played for CND; tonight the proceeds go to Greenpeace. The neighbourly, eccentric, tolerant England which Madness celebrate is under threat and they know it. Madness still play good-time music, but now with an anxious sobriety as if bracing themselves — and us — for the bad times just around the corner.
