STEVE EARLE'S decision to write from the perspective of the 'American Taliban' in the controversial song 'John Walker's Blues' appears to have stemmed from the view that John Walker Lindh wasn't free to talk for himself. But yesterday, at the sentencing part of his trial, Walker not only proved that he can talk for himself, but indicated that he is far more contrite for his actions than Earl's lyrics would suggest.
