Jimi Hendrix (Dir. Joe Boyd, John Head and Gary Weis; Warner Bros.)
Cliff White, Black Music, December 1973
IN THE heady atmosphere of swinging London it was often overlooked that Hendrix was Black. Musically he was pigeonholed in a multi-colour no man's land, a target set alongside the other guitar heroes. Reaction against unprecedented use of sound and the lifestyle which claimed him as it's own was too strong for anything deeper than arbitrary opinions. Now that the hysteria is just a sour taste left at the graveside it is time for a re-assessment.
