THE NEWS that Howe Gelb is to retire Giant Sand after 31 years is bittersweet. Given the fact that the Tuscon, Arizona indie rock 'anti-brand' has never been a stable entity, this feels less like the end of a cherished group than the beginning of a new chapter in Gelb's idiosyncratic career.
