George Duke: Thief In The Night (Elektra)
Frank Owen, Melody Maker, 1 June 1985
A UNIVERSITY trained jazz musician, George Duke first came to notoriety as a keyboards player with the Mothers Of Invention. There he was a key influence on the aleatory-Varese-jazz-rock workouts of Frank Zappa. Subsequently, he became a major figure on the fusion scene, collaborating with the likes of Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke and Billy Cobham. But, for a man who once cited Stravinsky, Stockhausen and Miles Davies as key influences, he's been slumming it of late.
