AS THE millennium dawned Franz Ferdinand were hailed as the saviours of British rock. Cheekbone-sharp and catwalk-cool, these angular Anglo-Scottish aesthetes were arty smarties who loved to party. Their mission statement was to make girls dance with bouncy rhythms and brainy lyrics, which worked just fine for a while. But they quickly proved to be indie-rock traditionalists posing as post-punk modernists, and their limited bag of tricks became repetitive.
