Etta James: Town And Country Club, London

Roger St. Pierre, Blues & Soul, 1 December 1992

ETTA JAMES is a big, big lady, with a big, big voice — and she certainly made full use of her lung-power in wowing her London audience, which was just as well because they weren't too happy that she took so long to get out on stage and start her show. Not only did it start late but is finished early too, with no real attempt at an encore. The saving grace was that what we did get to hear was stunningly good — and her on-stage persona, winking eyes, pouting lips and shaping those big, big legs is charisma of the most magical kind.
