IF YOU WANTED the complete Washboard Sam, you'd be looking at seven CDs (DOCD-5171-7) but they wouldn't tell you any more about the artist than this double set. Having said that, the compiler has avoided Sam's earliest singles on Vocalion thus denying the listener the pleasures of the original 'Mama Don't Allow' (two versions) and 'Who Pumped The Wind In My Doughnut', a splendid little euphemism that should have been used more often. Then there's 'I'm A Groundhog' and 'Dirty Mother For You'.
