Various Artists: Lost Soul, Vols. 1-3 (Epic, import)

Barney Hoskyns, New Musical Express, 12 June 1982

THERE’S A tendency amongst the kind of hipsters who live on a steady diet of pot, Pigbag, General Saint, etc, to think of Soul – "soul" in the Stax sense – as some exclusively 1960s phenomenon. As black pop music before 1970, before disco, before funk. Even those lads who suddenly last summer fancied themselves as ageing "soulboys" seem to be unaware that between 1970 and 1975 there was something other than Street Funk coming off the streets of Black America.
