ON THE MORNING of the 23rd of June 1996, Stuart Pearce was the most famous person in the country. The previous afternoon, England had beaten Spain 4-2 on penalties at Wembley Stadium in the quarterfinals of Euro 96, the first major soccer tournament staged in Britain for thirty years.
