THERE WAS a general impression among the rock writers when I arrived that jazz was something that went with pottery in St Ives, whereas I felt jazz was extremely alive and more exciting than the crap they were listening to. When I first started writing for them they were amazed, they realized they actually liked my style. I hoped that it would lead a lot of people into the music. Fat chance.
