The Beach Boys: Surf's Up (Brother/Reprise 6653)

Metal Mike Saunders, The Rag, 8 November 1971

ENOUGH'S BEEN written about the Beach Boys' comeback to choke a horse, and 99% of it has been rubbish. The Beach Boys have been putting out great albums starting with Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, All Summer Long, and Beach Boys Party, and on up through Smiley Smile, Friends, and 20/20 (my faves, anyway); in every respect — whether production, songwriting, or group singing — they have been one of the most creative groups in rock since 1963. And that means rocknroll too — which is exactly what they were doing with 'I Get Around' and 'Be True To Your School': rocking out.
