Talk Talk: Laughing Stock
Betty Page, Vox, October 1991
BACK IN 1981, Talk Talk were a laughing stock. Branded "the new Duran Duran", their melancholy pop was largely ignored. They survived the '80s by having a measured success in Europe, which enabled main man Mark Hollis to venture into more experimental areas. This culminated in their last album, the extraordinary Spirit Of Eden, about as removed from their pop beginnings as Ornette Coleman is from Spandau Ballet.
