Sonic Youth: Sister (Blast First)

Simon Reynolds, Melody Maker, 30 May 1987

SONIC YOUTH is the itching, striving sound of a literate rock group struggling to assassinate their own intelligence, to unseat the mind's mastery, and achieve a fall. But for all their scraping and striving, do Sonic Youth manage to reach this vertiginous point of black-out? Not quite, or rather only sometimes; in fleeting moments amidst much restless, straining effort; in the rollercoaster plunge of 'White Cross', or when the music suddenly clots, chokes up on itself.
