Sleeper: The Duchess, Leeds
Dave Simpson, The Guardian, 20 February 1995
A GREAT song and a video are no guarantee of credible pop success. It helps to have a Talking Point as well. No-one understands this principle better than Louise Wener of Indie-pop guitar quartet Sleeper. Last year her wilfully controversial pronouncements on sex, Aids, sex, political correctness, sex, monogamy and er, sex ensured a ready-made platform from which to launch her band. Perfect. But with the decidedly underwhelmed response to Sleeper's debut album, Smart, Wener finds herself in a situation she couldn't have planned: relying on the music.
