Savoy Brown: A Step Further (Parrot PAS 71029)

Gary Kenton, Fusion, 28 November 1969

IT'S PRETTY frustrating to be a victimized musician these days. It has always been, of course, but now, with all these quasi-blues heavies making it big, a consistent unobtrusive blues group could go more than just a little crazy. You can talk all day about the importance of art, but when a group isn't attracting attention, they're liable to resort to some artistically questionable, but financially sound, tactics. The masses may not be able to tell what's good, but they can tell what's different. This may be very close to the reasoning behind Savoy Brown's newest album A Step Further which, even in its title, attempts to show change — perhaps for its own sake. Fortunately, the group, a steady English blues outfit, has enough talent to make it a really fine album anyway.
