Philip Bailey: Continuation (Columbia)

Steve Bloom, Record, January 1984

PHILIP BAILEY, like the Commodores' Walter Orange, is one of those overlooked vocalists who has had to settle for a career of group success over individual achievement. As the falsetto foil to Maurice White's tenor in Earth, Wind & Fire — who could forget his searing solos on 'Reasons' and 'Fantasy'? — Bailey has earned repeated praise and some have gone so far as to compare his chops with Smokey Robinson's. Not bad company at all.
