Metallica lead speed metal to arena stardom

Toby Goldstein, Circus, 31 December 1988

"I KNOW this sounds very un-rock & roll, but for the first time ever, we're all very 9 concerned with getting enough sleep." Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich laughs somewhat sheepishly, but he's absolutely on target about his band's need to be in top condition to perform their no-holds-barred, two-hour show on the average of five nights a week. While 1988 hasn't required too many adjustments from the California-based headbangers, revving up for their first full-length arena headlining tour, which began in the U.S. on November 15th, has certainly posed a major challenge.
