Martha and the Muffins
Jon Young, Trouser Press, April 1981
SPOT THE one that doesn't belong: (a) rock 'n' roll, (b) aggression, (c) rationality, (d) energy. Normally, of course, you'd say that being rational has nothing to do with the rowdy self-importance that characterizes rock 'n' roll. One delightful exception is Canada's Martha and the Muffins, a smart sextet that gained prominence in 1979 with a British hit single, 'Echo Beach'. In their case it's aggression that's missing; if they feel any of the traditional arrogance, it's well-concealed.
