Marley Marl: In Control, Volume 1 (Cold Chillin' 925 783)

Jeff Lorez, Blues & Soul, 11 October 1988

MARLEY MARL'S forte comes in diversifications within a safe context. Firstly, by finding infectious hooks with which to lace his jams, such as a deep, resounding bassline on the chunky 'Droppin' Science' and then contrasting that with the lazy, almost apathetic 'We Write The Songs' that features Biz singing the Barry Manilow song chorus in such a sleepy off beat way that it actually works. Thus the precedent is set for a constant chopping and changing throughout the rest of the album.
