Ludus, Swell Maps: The Factory, Manchester

Mick Middles, Sounds, 6 October 1979

THE VERY sloppy Swell Maps are presently attempting to conquer the art of turning badness into madness. Their jokey, half-formulated view of rock'n'roll is intriguing to watch, but unfortunately fairly painful to listen to. They wander around the stage, they whistle, they laugh, they talk to each other during songs, in fact Swell Maps are the most professional unprofessional band I've ever had the (mis)fortunte to witness. Visually speaking that is.
