AUDIO: Joe Tex (1977)

Cliff White, Rock's Backpages audio, 2 April 1977

Interviewed in the Evers Motel in Fayette, Mississippi, Joe Tex talks about signing to Epic; hitting big with 'Ain't Gonna Bump No More'; being an observer of people; his philosophy of life; his early career — the labels, the rip-offs, including his version of 'All I Could Do Was Cry'; his feud with James Brown; his influences, and finding his own voice; signing with Buddy Killen and cutting 'Hold What You've Got', the first of his string of hits on Dial. Finally, he talks about his conversion to the Nation of Islam and his resulting peace of mind.
