The Gospel at Colonus Soundtrack (Elektra/Nonesuch)

Michael Azerrad, Rolling Stone, 16 June 1988

THIS YEAR'S award for Best Gospel Adaptation of a Greek Tragedy will surely go to The Gospel at Colonus, the Broadway musical that presents Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus in the form of a black Pentecostal church service, complete with a thirty-eight-voice choir and three vocal groups. Not surprisingly, this gospel oratorio of soaring, exhilarating music makes an exuberant transition to vinyl.
