Inside the Philly Sound

Tony Cummings, Black Music, February 1976

The Philly Sound isn't just the O'Jays, Three Degrees or the Bluenotes. In this, the second part of our feature complimenting Tony Cummings' recently published book The Sound Of Philadelphia (Eyre Methuen, price £2.75), the author takes an inside look at some of the up-and-coming Philly acts like Carolyn Crawford and Instant Funk and the unacknowledged behind-the-scenes figure Frank Virtue. This then is another vivid account of the frenetic activity which goes into the records emanating from the City Of Brotherly Love.
