In A Mellotone: The Apollo
Michael Lydon, Yale Daily News, 16 April 1964
THE APOLLO Theater has the biggest sign on the biggest street in Harlem. The broad red letters can be seen for blocks on west 125th above the chaos of lights on bars, record stores, steak shops, and department stores nearby. Black letters on the marquee spell the names of the show's stars, usually appearing for a week beginning on Friday. They might be gospel singers, jazz men, dancers, comedians, even a female impersonator revue, but mostly it's rhythm and blues.
