Heart and Soul: Valerie Wilmer replies to last week's Soul Dialogue

THE SHEER triviality of most of the arguments put forward in the Soul Searching "Dialogue" last week were answer enough to the current state of so-called soul music. With the notable exception of Tony Cummings, the participants displayed the kind of superficiality, nonchalance and lack of grey matter that has increased the lack of understanding of this music as it has plummeted from the peaks set by Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin to the depths of mediocrity epitomised by the Three Degrees.
