IT'S SAID THAT The Smiths chose such a prosaic name to throw the fabulous, doomed glamour of their music into dramatic relief. Charles Thompson aka Black Francis has now transmogrified into regular guy Frank Black and made the most exotic and colourful record of his career. Taking The Sultans Of Ping FC as the opposite case, we might have a law of rock here. The more ordinary the name, the more extraordinary the music.
