Esquerita: The First Wild Man of Rock'n'roll
Miriam Linna, Spin, August 1990
ONE OF THE truly enigmatic characters in rock'n'roll history, Eskew Reeder (AKA Esquerita) falls somewhere between the Phantom and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, although he could out-whomp the stiffest competition in one bloodcurdling, brain-tamping holler. He credited his vocal style to a couple of opera-singing neighbor girls back home in Greenville, South Carolina.
