A LOT OF British heavies on the order of Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, and even Elton John came out of the soul club tradition, learning their axes by playing Sam & Dave, Temptations, and Sly numbers all night long for sweaty dancers. But while they've gone on to other styles, the Average White Band, six plug-ugly Scots from Dundee, have kept working within the soul and R&B idiom that was their first love.
