Robin Katz

Tamara Jermott is a pseudonym for Robin Katz
Robin Katz

This American is still best known for her weekly Jackson Five (J5) page in Record Mirror, which featured news, fan poems and artwork, love letters and contests. I'm now told that the J5 page of the early 1970s gave "a creative outlet to a generation of young Afro-Caribbean British kids" for which I am very proud.  Under a pseudonym, I also started the J5 fan club for Motown UK, worked there as a press assistant and ghosted Michael's columns in countless teenage magazines. J5 fans used to wait for me outside Record Mirror's Carnaby St. offices or they'd congregate by my flat. As the actual J5 were in America, they would ask for my autograph instead. This was the closest I got to knowing what Paul McCartney's life is like.

Since 1972, I've been published in over 80 papers: Disc, Sounds, Record Mirror, a little NME, Black Echoes and Let It Rock (especially the Women In Rock issue ). I toured with Springsteen for Street Life, circa '75 and landed a cover story on Patti Smith in Sounds (Dec '75). (Truth be told it's only because Barbara Charone couldn't fly to America and write it, due to an ear infection.)

My credits include a few nationals like the Daily Mail, trades like Music Week, women's magazines like Girl About Town, Honey and Over 21. I wrote for countless teenage magazines  like Jackie and Mirabelle, when it was considered corny. Later, I was one of the first writers recruited for Smash Hits, when writing for teens was now considered cool. My radio work includes BBC Radio 4 (with Ned Sherrin), Capital Radio (Sarah Ward's shows), BBC World Service and BBC Radio Scotland. I spent three years editing various magazines for the Virgin Group of companies; including in-flight magazine Hot Air, but later legally battled their radio station over libel and sexual harassment. They settled in 1997. In 1999, I won a Guardian contest to spend several days alone with free internet time and used it to research George Gershwin.

After that, I returned to the USA because of family reasons. Aside from an annual holiday e-letter sent to friends, this is the first thing I've written in a while. Thanks.
