My memory of him then was of a personable, straightforward guy, with a young person's enthusiasm that at times bordered on the gauche — which was refreshing and quite charming compared to the studied cool of some of his more jaded peers. A self-aware writer, Wallace weaves all that detail into this remarkable story, also revealing his expensive schooling and his family's hopes that he might be army officer material. But his love of music wrenched him away from all that into a completely different world.
