WHEN BLACK superstar Rick James, who has sold more than 10 million albums during the past four years, first heard about MTV, he was enthusiastic. But after several weeks of viewing the 24-hour-a-day all-music cable channel that airs promotional video clips provided by record companies, his excitement turned to anger: "I'd watch the groups and I'd watch the groups, and I'd say, 'When is there going to be anything black on this show?' and I never saw anything black on there."
