In the 1980s, Albert Goldman became the most famous and despised biographer in the world because of his biographies of Elvis Presley (Elvis, McGraw Hill, 1981) and John Lennon (The Lives of John Lennon, Morrow, 1988). In the 1990s, when it looked as if he were about to break out of that mold and move on to more positive subjects, he was mortally struck by a serious illness and burdened with another dead-rock-star exposé biography. Shortly after that, in 1994, Goldman died. Nobody was clear about the cause of his death.
