Well Red: Motion (Virgin)

Lucy O'Brien, New Musical Express, 30 May 1987

WITH THIS debut album Well Red, a pointy nosed white boy and a black Lovers rock-head, prove they're the best of Britain's fresh funky little buggers. Earlier releases showed a tendency to cram in too many ideas and lose the focus, whereas now, on Motion, the cluttering is ironed out and everything has come together. Touring with James Brown, The Gap Band and Mantronix has obviously paid off: Well Red are good pupils, and learning from their successors has enabled them to hone down their expectations to produce a unified mother of a dance record.
