The forecast for the Los Angeles basin is bleak, but it doesn't take a weatherman to see this one coming. A moist stillness hangs in the air, the flat grayness above extending into forever. It's not a good day for a drive, but the freeway heading due east from L.A. points towards Victoria Williams and Mark Olson's place in the scrublands on the edge of the Mojave.
