Victoria Spivey: Queen of the Blues

Richard Harrington, Unicorn Times, December 1975

HALFWAY INTO her 70th year, Victoria Spivey is a queen with a diminishing court. She is perhaps the last of the great women blues singers, certainly the last to still perform and hold to the gritty traditions of her art. For almost 25 years, she has lived in Brooklyn, and for most of the last 15, her energies have been split between occasional live performances (at folk and blues festivals, colleges, and in Europe) and the demands of her own record company, an amalgam of old timers and new disciples.
