Van Morrison: Enlightenment
Max Bell, Vox, November 1990
VAN MORRISON HAS TWO SONGS THESE DAYS. There is the casually crafted one which often climaxes with Van reciting the litany of great soul artistes — by implication aligning himself with such gentlemen as James Brown, Solomon Burke and Sam Cooke — and the mystic one, generally Celtic in flavour, larded with references to Zen Buddhism and earth communion.
