Up From The Underground: Sterling Morrison

Bill Bentley, Austin Sun, 19 October 1975

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND was often accused of being ahead of their time. Not true. The band was very much of their time. But it was New York City time and it took the rest of the country five, maybe ten years to catch up. The first songs–'Heroin,' 'Waiting for the Man,' 'Venus in Furs'–might have sounded foreign and dark in 1965. In 1975 their content is a foregone conclusion.
