UNKLE: Psyence Fiction (Mo'Wax/London); DJ Spooky: Riddim Warfare (Outpost)

Marc Weingarten, Vibe, October 1998

IF HOP HOP has (traditionally) functioned as a vehicle for moving butts, then DJ Spooky and DJ Shadow are two wigged-out wallflowers out on its lunatic fringe, viewing the genre less as a means for getting physical than as a way to sneak into your mental crawl space. And don't call it trip hop either; these two turntable renegades are so far beyond that finite universe, we're gonna have to start tracking them with the Hubble telescope.
