Ultravox: Vienna (Chrysalis)

Wesley Strick, Creem, January 1981

EVER WANT to meet the geniuses who made Gary Numan viable? Well, here they are. Most of them, I mean. John Foxx is gone, with another guy (name of Midge Ure) stepping out on lead vocals, guitars, synths. Also, new record label. Good graphics: moody, expressionistic. Warren Cann looking like Bryan Ferry with gene splice of Wayne Newton. Atmospheric title, too. (Know anyone who's ever been there?) Album coproduced by band and Connie "Kraftwerk" Plank. Mixed at Connie's studio (near Koln). Starting to get goosebumps? I know I am.
