ON THE DAY that man first trod upon the moon, Brazilian stars Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were bidding a reluctant farewell to their homeland. Just before Christmas 1968, the dictatorship that had ruled Brazil since the coup of 1964, passed the first Institutional Act, a bill which effectively undermined civil rights and suppressed artistic expression.
