THE PROBLEM with prog rock was that it didn't actually progress anywhere; musical frontierism was merely a smokescreen for some of the most wanky follies in rock. Time and time again, Tortoise raise the question of whether they are more concerned with self-indulgence (bad) or self-transcendence (good). That they've had the discipline to whittle the many hours of sessions since 1996's Millions Now Living... to a manageable 65 minutes is promising.
