Tina Turner: Break Every Rule (Capitol)

Craig Zeller, Creem, January 1987

A RECENT read through I, Tina, Ms. Turner's painfully honest life story, confirmed two things for me: 1) You won't find any used "I Like Ike" buttons lying around her house; 2) No matter how many times this woman's been down (physically, emotionally, professionally) she was never ever out. Her resilience and her ability to keep on keepin' on are right out of Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Equally amazing is the fact that she's survived an almost-uninterrupted string of inferior records (excluding 'It's Gonna Work Out Fine', the cyclonic remake of 'Proud Mary', and the frenzied 'River Deep — Mountain High') and a mountain of showbiz crapola to get to the level of savoir faire quality that she's at now.
