The White Stripes: Astoria Theatre, London, 21st November

The Rev. Al Friston, Rock's Backpages, 24 November 2001

THE MOTOR CITY IS BURNING – on London's Charing Cross Road. An hilariously heraldic "City Of Detroit" flag – with a Latin inscription translating as We Hope To Rise From The Ashes – hangs behind support band the Von Bondies, and it's still there when Motor City siblings Jack and Meg White take the stage before a teeming (and Red Stripe-imbibing) crowd at 9.30 pm. The Stooges' Fun House plays on the p.a. between the two sets. A roadie lurches about in a Metallic K.O. T-shirt.
