The Supremes

Tony Cummings, Black Music, October 1975

THE LEGENDARY Supremes are back in Britain. Showbusiness cannot exist without legends. Be it a crackvoiced Sinatra, or a drawling Dylan, a cool crooner or a raunchy rock band, showbusiness demands stars with a capital 'S', entertainers who sell their souls to the bitch goddess of success, whose performance never ends, who infinitely blink in the blinding glare of mass public interest and who cease to exist as flesh and blood humanity but become the larger than life, never-never world projection of the ideals and fantasies of an adulatory audience.
